[Incheon, South Korea] Huneed Technologies announced on Wednesday that it has signed a 30.3 Billion Korean Won contract to supply localized Identification of Friend or Foe (IFF) systems to be delivered to the ROK Navy. Part of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) led performance improvement plan to replace the current IFF Mode 4 standard used by military forces to the latest Mode 5 standard.
IFF is a radar-based identification system designed for command and control. It uses a transponder that listens for an interrogation signal and then sends a response consisting of a unique signal that identifies the broadcaster. It enables military and civilian air traffic control interrogation systems to identify aircraft, vehicles or forces as friendly and to determine their bearing and range from the interrogator. IFF may be used by both military and civilian aircraft. IFF was first developed during the Second World War, with the arrival of radar, and several infamous friendly fire incidents.
Huneed is to integrate new IFF systems (made up of rack mounted interrogator, transponder, and control panel) on existing ROK Naval vessels by the end of year 2023.
This contract builds on Huneed’s increasing role as a center of IFF excellence. Last March, Huneed was also selected as the preferred bidder to supply IFF System for the next generation Naval Frigate (FFX-III).
Through these two IFF projects, Huneed is positioned as maritime IFF leader in Korea and will pursue additional program wins on future follow-on Naval ships in the future.
